History of Altadena

It is believed that Altadena was inhabited by Native Americans. In the late 1700's and early 1800's, it was settled as part of the Rancho San Pascual as established by the Mexican Government in 1826. 

Altadena, California is approximately 15 miles northeast of Los Angeles, in unincorporated Los Angeles County, just north of Pasadena and east of La Canada. To the north of Altadena is the Angeles National Forest. 

Altadena is a wonderful Southern California community with a rural feeling and easy access to trails located in the adjacent San Gabriel mountains.

Altadena Library District - Friends of the Altadena Library is a non-profit organization that supports the Library, it's programs and services. The Altadena Library Foundation further supports and enriches the Library District.

Altadena Town Council - Meetings are every third Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in the Altadena Community Center, 730 E. Altadena, Dr., directly adjacent to the Sheriff's Station. The meetings are recorded and televised during the month on Charter cable channel 56.

Altadena Sheriff Station - 780 E. Altadena Dr., Altadena, Telephone: (626) 798-1131.  Check the website for information on their annual Summer Concert Series at Farnsworth Park.

Altadena Mountain Rescue Team

Altadena Foothills Conservancy - "Established to promote the preservation and restoration of open land and associated historic structures for ecological, educational, cultural, and scenic purposes. Serving the San Gabriel Mountains Foothill Corridor and Associated Watersheds."

Eaton Canyon Natural Area - a zoological, botanical and geological nature reserve located at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains. Enjoy hiking and equestrian trails, picnic areas, botanical wonders and more. Check the website for guided tours and info on events.

Janes Village - a northwest Altadena neighborhood "designated in 2002 as an "Altadena Heritage Area" by Altadena Heritage. This designation was bestowed upon the area because of the unique architectural and historical character of the homes of this area which were largely designed and built by Elisha (E.P.) Janes between 1924 and 1926." The area is bordered by Fair Oaks Avenue on the east, Loma Alta Drive on the north, Lincoln Avenue on the west and Ventura Street on the south.
